DUKE Rhyme Star

Need bottled ink or refills?

"I just had to tell you how beautiful the pen is! It arrived today and *did* cheer me up completely! I didn't expect the iridescence to be as stunning as it is. I also really like the nib. I have one of the Sailor calligraphy pens, which I love, but it is very different, with sharp edges and a flat nib. The Rhyme Star is much softer. I love the broad brush-like look I can get with the broad side, and the fine line when I write on the tip. Thanks so much - this is going to be on my list of favorites for a long time!" M. D., Portland, OR

"Thanks Norman!  I received the pen in today's mail and have been writing with it for the past few hours. It is just superb! This upturned calligraphy nib writes like a super smooth stub nib and has excellent line variation with just mild pressure. The presentation box is first class too, better than the Japanese and most of the Italian pen makers! I am definitely hooked on this brand....I'd say that based on the Rhyme Star, Duke compares favorably to Namiki's offerings." C.C., Baltimore, MD

Duke Rhyme Star w/Chinese calligraphy nib   $55.00    Sold out

In the Rhyme Star we have a number of interesting features that sets this pen apart. Measuring 5-3/8" capped and 5-3/4" posted, the barrel of the pen is subtly shaped to proved an exceedingly comfortable grip. Although from a distance the barrel may look round, it's actually slightly indented where one's thumb and index finger would tend to go, and very slightly humped at the top (this can be discerned by tracing the curved shape of the reflected light along the barrel of the two images above).

The finish is resin-over-metal, and has a 'iridescent sparkle' under direct light, in a combination of magenta and purple. The cap is imprinted with the DUKE name and crown underneath the curvaceous spring-mounted clip, and 'Rhyme Star' on one side. The elongated end cap is actually a 'blind cap', as it unscrews to reveal the permanently emplaced turn-knob of the piston filler.

Removing the slip cap and posting it on the rear of the blind cap produces an interesting visual design statement, as the curve of the clip is carried through to the curved bottom of the cap, producing a very unusual center band, as seen in the very first photo on the page.

Removing the cap of course also reveals the 14K gold nib. Seen from above, the nib displays the same engraved concentric ovals that are found in the design of the DUKE Columbus nib, which likewise has 'Duke' in flowing script as well as '14K' and the charming '580' (which should read '585' to indicate 14K gold). However, it's not until you look at this nib from the side that you realize what sets it apart!

The Rhyme Star sports a Chinese calligraphy nib, or 'art' nib. As can be seen from the upward sweep of it profile, this type of nib bears no relationship to a western-style calligraphy nib. This nib should be thought of more as a 'metal brush', designed to approximate the brushstrokes used in traditional Chinese calligraphy. Although words can indeed be written with this style of nib, it should in no way be considered a regular writing pen. Even to describe the point as a 'medium' doesn't really mean too much in a conventional fountain pen sense. I certainly can't say that I've mastered writing or drawing with the pen, but it's been fun trying .

This might not end up being one of the most utilitarian pens in your collection, but certainly one of the most interesting. It comes gift boxed in a cream-colored Duke pen box with a lifetime warranty, serviceable through Shanghai.

IMPORTANT SERVICE NOTE: Every nib that ships from His Nibs is closely examined under high magnification and tuned or adjusted if needed. About 85% of modern nibs need some adjustment out-of-the-box from the manufacturer for an optimal writing experience. Most commonly, the tines of the nib are misaligned -- which would cause scratchiness at the minimum; the slit between the tines is partially or fully closed -- which would starve the nib of ink and at best cause skipping; or the slit between the tines is too wide -- which will either again cause skipping, or conversely, flooding. There are other factors  -- such as separation of the nib from the feed -- that are inspected and repaired before any pen leaves the Palace.

The only 100% guarantee of course comes when the pen is actually filled with ink and written with for the first time, but our pre-shipping inspections and tunings have eliminated 99.99999 (my finger is getting tired) of the frustrations that a customer experiences when first using a new fountain pen. Although this can be time-consuming on occasion, it affords our customers a much more pleasant experience when receiving a fountain pen from His Nibs -- and saves us the frustration of dealing with returns!

Warranties and returns

If an item proves to be defective, in most cases the manufacturer's warranty will apply. However, please email us first so that we can determine the easiest way to resolve the problem to your satisfaction. In the case of fountain pens -- which are a bit more individualistic than other writing instruments -- what may at first appear to be a defect (hard starting or poor flow for example), can in almost all cases be resolved with a few simple 'tweaks' to the nib, which we'll be happy to guide you through or perhaps suggest returning to us for adjustment.

Should you wish to return a non-defective item within 3 days of receipt because it doesn't suit you for some reason, again please email us and we'll arrange an exchange, credit or refund (minus any shipping/insurance charges), if the item is returned in an 'as new' condition. If you've dipped a fountain pen to try its writing characteristics, kindly clean off any ink residue prior to shipping -- to save us both a nasty surprise .

We want you to be happy with your purchase from His Nibs.com and hope to have you join the ranks of our many long-term, repeat customers!
