Heritage Word Gauge
Need bottled ink
or refills? "The Conklin Word Gauge fountain pen arrived while I was doing my Christmas tour of Texas. The tour involves touching base with relatives. Needless to say, I was anticipating the arrival of the Conklin Word Gauge FP. The Word Gauge was even more useful than I had imagined. Being able to know the amount of ink in the pen was wonderful. The little window has measurements that give exact volume of ink available. That is so helpful when I am taking notes at meetings. My hand doesn't tire when writing because the Conklin WG's nib moves along on the paper with ease and clarity. It is attractive. Maybe handsome would be a better description . I am enjoying this amazing fountain pen." A. G., San Antonio, TX
"What a great pen Norman! A terrific
value, which now joins the sold-out limited edition I purchased from
you earlier, at almost double the price. I went for the black this
time, as it's a bit more sedate for business functions than the red
limited edition -- but I see the blue in my near future as well. I
love the large ink capacity and thank you as always for the nib
inspection/adjustment and quick shipping. Now, along with my
collection of Dollar pens, I have my piston fillers covered. You're
the best."
Conklin Heritage Word Gauge Black -- Piston
Fill
Conklin Heritage Word Gauge Blue -- Piston
Fill
As is the case with the other Limited Edition Conklin Heritage models, the Word Gauge piston-filler reintroduces a classic Conklin model from the company's illustrious past -- in a deep, lustrous pearlescent Italian resin for the blue, and a rich ebony Italian resin for the black. Unlike the limited edition version which listed -- and sold -- for $295.00, these non-limited-edition pens are exactly the same -- except they list for $195.00 (which means your price is $156.00)! Engraved on the barrel is 'Word Gauge' and 'Made in Italy'. The pen measures 5-1/2" capped, 6-1/2" posted and 5" with cap held aside. It's the first piston-fill since YAFA resurrected the brand and reintroduces the markings on the transparent yellow ink reservoir that 'gauge' the number of words written (this will of course vary between nib size chosen). The scale has markings for 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 or 5000 words -- with a bit of wiggle room beyond that.
Unscrewing the cap displays the two-toned steel nib (the stub nib is monotone) which is engraved with the Conklin brand name and the historic “Toledo, Ohio, USA” mark. The nibs are available in M, F or the new stub sizes. I've found that the Conklin nibs run about a size smaller than typical western nibs. Hence, I'd classify the M as a fine and the F as an x-fine. The stub is a 1.1 mm medium. Please specify the nib size you'd like, by letter or 'stub' only, to avoid confusion when ordering. Filling instructions for the Word Gauge - Piston Fill Remove the cap to expose the nib. Place the fountain pen, nib first, into the bottle of ink and immerse the
complete nib and part of the gripping section. To ensure the Word Gauge fountain pen is full of ink, leave the nib in the
ink bottle for 10 seconds to ensure a full charge of ink to be taken up into the
ink reservoir. Hold the pen upright so that the nib is pointed up, and turn the knob anti-clockwise until the piston comes to a stop. Gently blot excess ink from the nib and gripping section with a lint-free cloth or blotter paper.
The cap screws off of the barrel and is friction fit should you choose to post it. Unscrewing the cap displays the two-toned steel nib (the stub nib is monotone) which is engraved with the Conklin brand name and the historic “Toledo, Ohio, USA” mark. As with all new pens, I recommend to run a dilute solution of dishwashing soap (two or three drops to a small bowl of water) through a new pen a few times, followed by water only. Step one is effective at removing manufacturing oils that can tend to make the ink less than enthusiastic in heading from the converter/filler to the nib, and step two removes the traces of the detergent you've used...which tends to have the opposite, diuretic effect. The large, blue Conklin gift box and warranty are included.

Warranties and returns If an item proves to be defective, in most cases the manufacturer's warranty will apply. However, please email us first so that we can determine the easiest way to resolve the problem to your satisfaction. In the case of fountain pens -- which are a bit more individualistic than other writing instruments -- what may at first appear to be a defect (hard starting or poor flow for example), can in almost all cases be resolved with a few simple 'tweaks' to the nib, which we'll be happy to guide you through or perhaps suggest returning to us for adjustment. Should you wish to return a non-defective item within 3 days of receipt because it doesn't suit you for some reason, again please email us and we'll arrange an exchange, credit or refund (minus any shipping/insurance charges), if the item is returned in an 'as new' condition. If you've dipped a fountain pen to try its writing characteristics, kindly clean off any ink residue prior to shipping -- to save us both a nasty surprise . We want you to be happy with your purchase from HisNibs.com and hope to have you join the ranks of our many long-term, repeat customers!
