Special note: After my first order sold out, I learned from Conklin that these were a limited-run model and production has been discontinued. We're left with the small and dwindling supply on hand at Conklin. Consequently, when ordering, please supply me with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th color choices -- as I won't know what they have left on hand until my order is processed. Thanks!

Conklin Heritage Word Gauge Red -- Piston Fill           $220.00    (Not in stock, but can be ordered)

The Word Gauge Carbon Fiber Stealth piston-filler is the latest Word Gauge iteration and reintroduces a classic Conklin model from the company's illustrious past -- in a fantastic matte black carbon fiber finish.

The pen measures 5-1/2" capped, 6-1/2" posted and 5" with cap held aside. It's the first piston-fill since YAFA resurrected the brand and reintroduces the markings on the transparent -- or colored translucent -- ink reservoir that 'gauges' the number of words written (this will of course vary between nib size chosen). The scale has markings for 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 or 5000 words -- with a bit of wiggle room beyond that.

Filling instructions for the Word Gauge - Piston Fill

Remove the cap to expose the nib.

Slowly turn the barrel end knob clockwise (emptying) until it stops turning, this will rotate the piston and will force the air out of the fountain pen.

Place the fountain pen, nib first, into the bottle of ink and immerse the complete nib and part of the gripping section.

Slowly turn the knob counter-clockwise (filling) until it stops again, while the nib is still in the ink bottle.

If necessary, repeat the steps above until no further air bubbles can be seen escaping from the nib and the Word Gauge section has filled with ink.

To ensure the Word Gauge fountain pen is full of ink, leave the nib in the ink bottle for 10 seconds to ensure a full charge of ink has been taken up into the ink reservoir.

On the final filling process, when the piston comes to a halt, turn the knob clockwise just far enough to bleed out a couple of drops of ink into the ink bottle.

Hold the pen upright so that the nib is pointed up, and turn the knob counter-clockwise until the piston comes to a stop.

Gently blot excess ink from the nib and gripping section with a lint-free cloth or blotter paper.

The cap screws off of the barrel and is friction fit should you choose to post it. Unscrewing the cap displays the two-toned steel nib (the stub nib is monotone) which is engraved with the Conklin brand name and the historic “Toledo, Ohio, USA” mark. Unscrewing the cap displays the black steel nib which is engraved with the Conklin brand name and the historic “Toledo, Ohio, USA” mark. The nibs are available in M, F or the 1.1 mm stub sizes. I've found that the Conklin nibs run about a size smaller than typical western nibs. Hence, I'd classify the M as a fine and the F as an x-fine. The stub is a 1.1 mm medium. Please specify the nib size you'd like, by letter or 'stub' only, to avoid confusion when ordering.

As with all new pens, I recommend to run a dilute solution of dishwashing soap (two or three drops to a small bowl of water) through a new pen a few times, followed by water only. Step one is effective at removing manufacturing oils that can tend to make the ink less than enthusiastic in heading from the converter/filler to the nib, and step two removes the traces of the detergent you've used...which tends to have the opposite, diuretic effect. The large, blue Conklin gift box and warranty are included.

Warranties and returns

If an item proves to be defective, in most cases the manufacturer's warranty will apply. However, please email us first so that we can determine the easiest way to resolve the problem to your satisfaction. In the case of fountain pens -- which are a bit more individualistic than other writing instruments -- what may at first appear to be a defect (hard starting or poor flow for example), can in almost all cases be resolved with a few simple 'tweaks' to the nib, which we'll be happy to guide you through or perhaps suggest returning to us for adjustment.

Should you wish to return a non-defective item within 3 days of receipt because it doesn't suit you for some reason, again please email us and we'll arrange an exchange, credit or refund (minus any shipping/insurance charges), if the item is returned in an 'as new' condition. If you've dipped a fountain pen to try its writing characteristics, kindly clean off any ink residue prior to shipping -- to save us both a nasty surprise .

We want you to be happy with your purchase from HisNibs.com and hope to have you join the ranks of our many long-term, repeat customers!
